Understanding Magnesium Reagent

Magnesium measurements are vital for diagnosing and treating both low (hypomagnesemia) and high (hypermagnesemia) levels of magnesium in the body.

Additionally, magnesium, a crucial intracellular cation, ranks second only to potassium in concentration. While the factors regulating plasma magnesium levels are not fully understood, it’s believed that the parathyroid gland may play a role. Magnesium ions activate several important enzyme systems involved in phosphate group transfer and hydrolysis.

Moreover, low serum magnesium levels are associated with conditions like diabetes, alcoholism, hyperthyroidism, and liver cirrhosis, while high levels may indicate renal failure, dehydration, or severe diabetic acidosis.


The Magnesium procedure employs a direct method where magnesium forms a colored complex with xylidyl blue in a strongly basic solution. Furthermore, calcium interference is effectively eliminated using glycoletherdiamine-N,N,N’,N’-tetraacetic acid (GEDTA). The resulting color is measured bichromatically at 520/800 nm, with intensity directly proportional to the magnesium concentration.
