When you have your blood pressure taken at the doctor’s office for the first time, it’s recommended that it be taken in both arms. But if you’re measuring at home, readings are often more easily taken in the non-dominant arm. If your home readings are different from those taken in the doctor’s office, be sure to discuss this with your healthcare professional.
Some Tips Before You Start to Measure…
Make sure the cuff fits.
Measure around your upper arm and choose a monitor that comes with the correct size cuff.
Be still.
Don’t smoke, drink caffeinated beverages or exercise within the 30 minutes before measuring.
Sit correctly.
Take multiple readings
Measure at the same time daily.
Accurately record all your results.
Understand the readings.
Optimal reading is less than 120/80 mm Hg (systolic pressure is 120 AND diastolic pressure is less than 80). Read Understanding Blood Pressure Readings to learn more about what the numbers mean.
Consult your healthcare professional if you get several high readings.
